Bovec, population 1,600, serves as the primary service hub, with outfitters, mountain guides, and equipment rental concentrated along Trg Golobarskih Žrtev. The town sits 15 kilometres from the Italian border and maintains a bilingual character inherited from centuries of Venetian and Austro-Hungarian rule. East of Bovec, the valley narrows into a series of rock-walled gorges where the riverbed drops through limestone slots barely five metres wide, creating hydraulic features that challenge even experienced paddlers.
